断捨離中に出てきた一冊のノート。何年も前に、何回か英語レッスンを受けたことがありました。その時に使ったノートを、この度、処分することにしたので、折角なので、こちらのブログに載せることにしました。どなたかのお役に立てたら嬉しいです。
単語と例文、先生からの一言などを書いてみます。

単語と文例
outline
持っているIdeaなどに対して、e.g. Why don’t you outline the opinion?
decline
丁寧に断るという意味の他に、”decrease”と同じ意味がある。
(例) The sales have been declining.
break something down
(例) When they did the market research (study), they broke the factor (item/category) down by age (sex/area).
suspect
犯罪などをsuspectするという意味の他に”think”の意味を持つ。必ずしもnegativeではなくnatural.
(例) Do you think they will get married? Yes, I suspect they will.
advance
会社の誰かの成績が良かった場合など。
(例) He made advances in the company.
(made advances to s/o, s/t)
ちなみに…
(take advantage of s/o, s/t)
(例) She took advantage of the position. (take advantage of s/o, s/tは必ずしもnegativeな状況ではない。)
lack
(例) The poor people lack money = The poor people are lack of money.
Emphasis vs emphasize
(例) He emphasized the key word in his speech. – more common
(例) He put (placed) emphasis on the key words in his speech.
fail to
(例) It never fails to rain on my vacation. 私の休暇にはいつも雨が降る。
(晴れの場合にはあまり使われない)
(例) She failed to take the test. vs. She failed the test.
widespread
Serious problemなどに。石油が海に流れた時など。
こぼれた牛乳にも使えるが、稀。
ジャケットに飲み物をこぼした時でも使用可。
dare
Dare you ~?の形は使われない。
Do you dare to do ~? ~する勇気がありますか?みたいな感じ。
research
I have to research this subject. – no preposition.
I have to do research on this subject.
device
Staplers, TV, telephone, etc. all can be a device.
We have a lot of convenience devices.
relieve
(例) I relieved him of his responsibility. (He was fired.)
(例) I relieved myself of the pain with aspirin. (The aspirin relieved my pain.)
commit
(例) I’m committed to the relationship.
(例) She was not committed to the hospital. (She did not have a commitment with the hospital./ She did not work at the hospital.)
by the skin of my teeth
(例) Jest after I got home, my father came back. I escaped his nagging by the skin of my teeth. (Barely. I was able to escape.)
on hand
(例) I have a lot of tea bags on hand.
put one’s foot down
(例) My mother never put her foot down. Thanks to mom, my brother is really spoiled.
しっかり怒ることが出来ない感じ。結果、子供がわがままに育ってしまった、的な。
twist one’s arm
(例) My mother dislikes hot-spring. Even if we twist her arm, she never goes.
強制的に何かさせようとする/無理矢理〇〇させようとする
pain in the neck
(例) It takes more than two hours to go to work in the morning due to heavy traffic. It is really a pain in the neck.
give one’s right arm
(例) I would give my right arm to go to Europe tomorrow morning. 目的のためならどんな犠牲も払います、的な意味。
elbow one’s way
(例) I saw my grandmother elbows her way to get on the train.
Have a good head on one’s shoulders
(例) I doubt that she has a good head on her shoulders.
assume
~の役を務める
(例) He assumed the role of Romeo in the play.
claim – “not sure” の意味を含む。
fall into place – make sense, to fit together – 非物理的
ジグソーパズルのピースがはまるのは「put into place」- 物理的
figure out – “guess” や “imagine”よりも、もっと”logical”
startle
(例) He was startled by the car horn.
straddle
先生曰く「主に、動物(馬とか)にまたがる時などに使う」
娘曰く「主に、人間が椅子等にまたがる時などに使う」
川が二県にまたがる、等の文に関しては「使用可とは思うけど…」と、反応が微妙でした。
attribute
(例) He attributed his success to his father’s encouragement. – 過去形にしてしまうと、もう今はattributeしていないようなので、過去形にしない。→He attributes his success to his father.
(例) (writing English) My talent is attributed to my mother. – 先生曰く、こういう言い方をすると、ちょっと高慢な印象らしい。
(例) (speaking English) I attribute my talent to my mother.
bring forth – carry something forward – 古い言葉なので、あまり使われない。主に本中などで。
formalize
(例) The principal of the school formalized that children have some exercise before the first class everyday. → The school principal formalized that children must have more exercise everyday before their first class.
先生からの一言
先生と話している時、aとかtheが抜けましたよ、的な指摘を度々受けました。そして言われた一言。
「a」とか「the」は、無くても相手に意味は大体通じるとは思うけど、教養を疑われたりするので、頑張って勉強を続けてね。
